The largest team within HealthIT, the Clinical Care Group manages informatics solutions that are directly or indirectly involved in patient care. The Clinical Care team performs work including application updates and fixes, implementation of new products, customization of vendor-provided solutions, and tailored upgrades to existing solutions.
In addition to the teams below, the Clinical Care Group also includes Portfolio Services and the Product Lifecycle Portfolio.

Acute Portfolio
The Acute Portfolio manages informatics solutions that help provide patient care in VUMC’s multiple hospitals, inpatient units, outpatient departments and perioperative areas. This includes multiple modules of eStar, VUMC’s current electronic health record and its customized version of Epic, including software that powers inpatient orders and documentation, unique workflows within the emergency room and oncology department, and perioperative units. -
Ambulatory Portfolio
The Ambulatory Portfolio manages informatics solutions that help provide patient care in the hundreds of outpatient clinics at Vanderbilt. This includes multiple modules of eStar, VUMC’s current electronic health record and its customized version of Epic, including software that powers clinic workflow, connection with VUMC research, and specialized needs for transplant, orthopedics, and ophthalmology. -
Ancillary Clinical Systems Portfolio
The Ancillary Clinical Systems Portfolio oversees a large number of applications that support patient care, including laboratory and imaging solutions. In addition, the team manages products related to cardiology and vascular care. These solutions are seamlessly integrated with other clinical care applications. -
Patient Engagement & Population Health
With the growth of the Vanderbilt Health Affiliated Network and VUMC’s focus on population health, it is imperative that there are robust tools in the informatics universe that enable clinicians and researchers to have useful data at their fingertips. The portfolio team also manages Vanderbilt’s patient portal, My Health at Vanderbilt, which allows VUMC patients to better manage their own health care. -
Pharmacy Portfolio
The Pharmacy Portfolio teams within HealthIT are responsible for the informatics solutions in outpatient and inpatient service areas. The teams provide technology tools that support a wide range of pharmacy needs at the Medical Center: ensuring care teams can order the right medications for patients, helping pharmacy staff fill prescriptions at outpatient pharmacies, and ensuring clinical outcomes are appropriately supported through medication therapies. Various vendor-based systems are managed within the portfolio and seamlessly link to other clinical care tools. Efforts of both teams help ensure safe and effective medication therapy is delivered to all patients. Finally, data analytics are used to quantify the clinical value of the medication therapies and services provided. -
Clinical Decision Support & Knowledge Engineering
The Clinical Decision Support and Knowledge Engineering teamwork to improve health care quality at VUMC by integrating decision support tools into clinical care applications. Tools support informed clinical decisions, knowledge engineering and evidence-based medicine.
